Even though I have passed through the gates of The Pines Catholic Camp more times than I can count, I am always filled with excitement and anticipation. You see, this is my “home away from home.” 17 years ago, I decided to take a job at the camp because I thought it would be a fun, summer job. I never could have imagined, then, that it would change my life and be the foundation upon which God would use to build me into the person I am today.

Upon arriving at the Diocese of Arlington, VA Workcamp, i was immediately impressed with the grandeur of the set up in the program room...dual projection screens, draped scaffolding, truss lighting, flown speakers, the works. It looked more like a diocesan youth conference than a workcamp. More impressive, however, was that EVERYONE from the program director to the sound technician possessed a deeply rooted faith life.

For the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Music Minister at one of the many Catholic Heart Workcamps that are held across the country each summer. First stop, Toledo, OH. When I arrived late Sunday night after having spent 13 hours traveling and missing my flight from Chicago, I was greeted by a couple of the members of Catholic Heart Workcamp Team 2-A.

We didn’t have flight reservations, hotel reservations, or a single ticket to any of the Papal events, but Laura and I, in a fit of spontaneity, made a decision the night before the pope was to visit NYC that we would be there too. With some craftiness, determination and most certainly prayer, everything fell into place. We traded in frequent flyer miles for flights, got online and found a hotel...
